Student facilities at the University of Geneva

The University of Geneva offers a wide range of activities to help students integrate more easily and to strike a better balance between their academic and social lives. Different services are available to students to help them resolve any difficulties they may face and to help them achieve greater independence. Amongst them are cultural activities, sports, accommodation, professional guidance, and information concerning health and social welfare.

Social Welfare and Health Information
The University Office for Information on Student Welfare and the Health Centre provides services aiming to facilitate student integration. Although the Health Antenna (Antenne Santé) staff do not write prescriptions or offer medical treatment, they are always willing to talk to students about personal issues, lend a sympathetic ear to their concerns, and provide needed information and guidance in resolving their problems. When necessary, they refer students to the appropriate practitioners.

Sports and Culture
A wide range of sports is available to students enrolled at the University of Geneva. These sports may be offered free-of-charge or at a preferential rate and include, inter alia: gymnastics, skiing, team sports, swimming, and tennis. The Office of Cultural Events provides information on cultural activities. It also organizes a variety of courses, training periods and workshops in the domains of music, theatre and dance, offered either free-of-charge or at very low cost. In addition, the University Film Club organizes three film series each year.

Libraries
The University has some 60 specialized libraries offering mainly free access to approximately one and a half million volumes covering all disciplines except for the engineering sciences. The libraries have a stock of some 11,500 current periodicals and add 55,000 volumes and 10,000 audio-visual materials to their collection each year. There are also substantial collections of CDs, as well as electronic resources such as databases and on-line journals, which have increased in number in recent years. All this material is available on-line.

Libraries are open all day non-stop from Monday to Friday until 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. The largest libraries remain open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons as well. The academic community also has access to the Geneva Public and University Library.

All University and Institute Libraries are computerized and connected to the Swiss computerized network, RERO.
