Student services & events

The Career Management Process is closely integrated into the IOMBA curriculum. In addition to student services, Career Services organizes a series of courses, seminars, and events, and also provides access to a valuable database of resources to direct each student's career search.

Student Services
Events

Student Services:

  • Personal advice and support:  Career Services works individually with each student, guiding each student through the career management process.
  • Resume and cover letter preparation: Curriculum opportunities assist students to developing personal marketing tools that stand out above the clutter, emphasize their abilities, and target specific goals.
  • Mock interviews: Role-playing and practice interviews with substantive feedback from peers and professors, allow students to prepare for eventual interviews.
  • Alumni mentoring and networking: As the European headquarters of the United Nations, and home to many NGOs and Social Entreprises, with international conferences a regular feature, Geneva is an excellent opportunity for networking. Career Services facilitates such networking by providing exclusive access to international conferences and connecting with current alumni.
  • Student-organized club events: The career department works with student leaders including Class representatives, NetImpact Presidents and Social Events Coordinator in setting up dinners, galas, outdoor excursions and "happy hour" drink events. A valuable forum for exploring your career path.

Events
Three kinds of events are organized by IOMBA Career Services:

1. IO Seminars: Throughout the year, the IOMBA program organizes a series of seminars that allow students to interact with visiting professionals from International Organizations in Geneva and beyond. Such seminars serve two purposes. First, they are a window into and allow students to explore individual International Organizations. Second, they are an excellent opportunity for those students with an interest in a particular organization to develop contacts within these institutions. In the past, such seminars have included presentations from organization such as (partial list):

  • The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ)
  • The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
  • The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
  • The World Health Organization (WHO)
  • The World Trade Organization (WTO)

2. Curriculum Integrated Learning Opportunities: In order to succeed in the IOMBA curriculum, most research papers require students to understand the organizational landscape, research parts of the IO system in depth, and develop competence in specific areas of interest. In order to do so, students must develop links with individual organizations. In fact, several courses take students out to organizations, forcing such interaction, and providing an invaluable opportunity to network with professionals. Examples of assignments for specific courses include:

  • "Live" case study development (Organizational Behaviour & Change Management).
  • Strategic marketing plans (Marketing and Public Relations / Fundraising).

3. Career Seminars: IOMBA Career Services organizes a series of seminars focussed specifically on the Career Management Process. These seminars take the student through self-evaluation, research, and preparation of a CV and networking skills. More detailed information of related events are available in the Career Services Calendar.

The IOMBA programme career service staff was directly responsible for securing my internship in an international organization in Geneva. I believe that experience was critical in helping me attain the post that I am in now.
